UNDERSTANDING MELES ZENAWI (1955-2012)

Five years (this time the 7th year) since his untimely death, aged 57, the name Meles Zenawi is still active in Ethiopian political discourse. Meles has been such an influential figure that he was able to institutionalise his thoughts, conceptions and even personal behaviours to alter the Ethiopian historical, political, legal and economic path. Sophisticated as his conceptions were to his supporters, the personality of the man is equally cloaked in mystery for his critics. Some brand the late Prime Minister as selfless, pragmatic and democratic minded. There are also people who rather depict the man as eccentric, dogmatic, and undemocratic. With all that featured in the most influential but controversial leader, understanding Meles means understanding the political economy of Ethiopia, at least in the past quarter of a century since 1991. Worth important to note is that, of all those that love or loath Meles, only a few group either in support or opposition of him have the means to affect Ethiopian politics, with the larger populace kept passive. In the face where philosophy, logic and principle have little effect in the political arena, what could give a relief to the people of Ethiopia is a strong man or political group able to deal with the hostile and rocky political landscape in his own way and appear up front to dictate. PERHAPS, SUCH A VALUE JUDGMENT MAY BE UNJUSTIFIED BY STANDARD POLITICAL NORMS. BUT WITH ELITISM ALIVE AND WELL, POLITICAL STABILITY WITHOUT THE FORCEFUL MANAGEMENT OF SOMEONE LIKE MELES ZENAWI IS UNACHIEVABLE.

AN ATTEMPT TO REDEFINE INDIVIDUALISM

Perhaps, no other people than economists, are more concerned with the concept of individualism. In fact, mainstream (orthodox) economic theories are designed based on the rational actor model. At the heart of the rational actor model is the notion of individualism. As a byproduct of this economic modelling, orthodox economics and neo-liberal economic orders takes individualism a pillar in their theorizations and policy prescriptions. Though colorful and smart looking, however, those teachings and policy recommendations has been criticized in many terms, particularly since the last two decades or so. This article argues that all those woes against mainstream (orthodox) economics is due to the ill-defined individualism that its theories and policy prescriptions rooted upon; and pin points redefining individualism as a way out. Moreover, this piece attempts to forward brief sketch into the whereabouts of the short comings of orthodox economics; pinpoint consequent socio-economic end-ups of conventional economics and highlight how the re-statement on individualism would mitigate the drawbacks of mainstream economics, both in theory (academic) and practice (policy) fronts.

In the first part, the history of Ethiopian literature in general and that of Amharic literature in particular is depicted, the reference period being from 1850's to 1960's. To that end, broad elements of literature - fiction and non-fiction - were reviewed, with focus on novel & novella, drama & plays, journalism & journalistic works. In the second part, the short biography of 30 Ethiopian literary giants depicted. The book reflects how the political, socio-economic and socio-cultural dynamics in Ethiopia shaped and/or shaped by literary works & life of Ethiopian writers.

GET NATURE RIGHT!

When I listen to the calls of nature, I hear a scream from all creatures. May be, we feel and hence lend our ears to the human grief only; the suffering of other life is however far from the table of discussions often times. However, unable to speak out their suffering in words doesn’t mean the fauna and flora are passive; a deeper look into the world entails they rather are showing their sufferings in action, calling for a fair world where no life flourishes at the expense of the other; a world which is just not only for humankind, but also for all life; calling for pretty fair allocation of resources in a way that may not affect the health of other living things: big or small, born or unborn, of all the present and future generations. In this article, I would try to put forward my views on why and how for a utopia, a world of dreams where just order prevails.

የኢትዮጵያ ችግር የአመል ችግር እንጂ ሌላ አይደለም!

የጽሑፌ ጭብጥ የጽሑፉ ርዕስ ነው። ዛሬ በውድ የኢትዮጵያ ወጣቶች ደም ስንናፍቀው የኖርነውን የነጻነት አየር መተንፈስ በጀመርንበት ወቅት የኢትዮጵያ ህዝብ እርስ በርስ ለመነቋቆር እና ለመበጣበጥ የሚነሳበት ምክንያት የለውም፤ ነገሩ የፖለቲካ አጀንዳ ልዩነት(ቢኖር እንኳ በንግግር መፍታት ይቻላል) ሳይሆን የአመል ነው። የአመል ችግር የሚለውን የሚጠቀልል የአማርኛ ቃል የቅንነት ችግር (Lack of integrity) ነው። ቅን አለመሆናችን ለብዙ መከራ ዳርጎናል፤ ከቤተሰብ ጀምሮ እስከ አገራዊ ችግሮቻችን መነሾ ናቸው የምላቸው ምክንያቶች የዚሁ ውጤት ናቸው።

ከኢትዮጵያዊነት የስነልቦና ውቅር የተፋታው የህወሃት የፖለቲካ መስመር !!!

የሰሞኑ የሶሻል ሚዲያ ጉዳይ አዲስ አበባ የማን ናት? የሚለው ነው። የአዲስ አበባ የባለቤትነት ጉዳይ መነሳቱ ስህተት የለውም። ችግሩ ኢትዮጵያ የዜጎቿ የመሆኗ ነገር እጅግ ባጠራጠረበት ዘመን አዲስ አበባ የማን ናት? ብሎ መጠየቁ የፌዝ ስለሚመስል ነው። ጥያቄው የፌዝ ነው ተብሎ ግን መልስ መስጠት አለመቻል ማብቂያ ለሌለው ሙግት እና/ወይም ጠብ ያጋልጣል። ይህ አይነት ሙግት ወይም ጠብ መንስኤም፣ ውጤትም (አሸናፊም ሆነ ተሸናፊ)፣ ማለቂያም የለውም፤ ትርጉም አልባ ነው።ይህ መጣጥፍ በዚህ እና ተዛማጅ ጉዳዮች ላይ ያተኮረ ነው።

The implication is clear: a resolve for rising cost of living would be rethinking the way we produce, and revisiting our conception on the essence of work.

BACK TO THE FUTURE !!!

A glimpse into the political history of Ethiopia tells politicians have incessantly fanned the flames of mass confusion, at least in two ways. One is how the governing circle has understood history, where they divide it into evil and good, while such value judgment on the essence of history is neither right nor wrong, but irrelevant altogether. The other missing point in Ethiopian political discourse is interruption of history, wrong interpretation of the past. The past may depict the fraternity or animosity between groups or people, but what matters is whether or not lessons have been learnt. Our past, which in some instances saw an Ethiopia in war with itself, and at another, the unity of the nation under one flag. Ethiopian political elite, rather than using it a source of propaganda, they should embrace history a medium to learn for better tomorrow.

RETHINKING DEVELOPMENT DISCOURSE

Emerging empirical evidences from development literature suggest that old way of looking the theory and practice meant to address the welfare of communities doesn’t appeal to particular contexts prevailing in developing world. As a result of that, it is not unusual to witness development policies to have remained impotent. All in all, academic and policy circles are expected to depart from the conventional paradigm. As such, development theories has to make their constructions on an interdisciplinary approach. Therefore, diverse fields of social science and methodological approaches has to be sought in synthesizing, explaining and making inferences on the wellbeing concept. Development policy should also be redesigned in a fashion to being an in-ward looking. This is to mean, rather than adhering a top-down approach, policy regimes should be designed and formulated on the local realities and contexts. While setting accounts on development practices a host of variables needs to be consulted. As such, formulating policies and strategies aimed at promoting the welfare of communities should take into account factors in the realm of economics, sociology, anthropology, psychology, past system of governance, history, geo-politics & geography, among others. Such is how the academic and policy regimes revisited to better serve the expectations of helping achieve collective wellbeing.
